7-Eleven ad for vote your favorite for US president by the color cup you choose

7-Eleven: Presidential Vote With Your Coffee Cup

I received an email from a reader yesterday asking why I was backing John McCain for President. The email proceeded to tell me why I shouldn't and so on. I was rather puzzled for a number of reasons. I had not discussed a presidential preference.  Out of curiosity or stupidity I emailed back. I asked the reader why he asked his question.

The reader pointed out I use a red coffee cup as the flavicon (the little symbol up top in the browser line at the top of your computer screen.)  Now in the interest of full disclosure my former girlfriend chose the red cup. I had nothing to do with it.

The reader told me the 7-Eleven corner store chain has a marketing promotional campaign.  When you stop by a 7-Eleven and buy a cup of coffee you get to pick a red cup if you support John McCain or blue cup if you support Barack Obama.  Evidently the company has done this in previous US elections. The predictions have predicted results for the past two elections.

Every time someone buys a cup of coffee at the 7-Eleven store the register tallies the color which is sent to a central tally site. The results are reported on CNN and USA Today on a daily basis.

7 Eleven doesn't have stores here in San Antonio so I wasn't aware of the promotion. And since I'm a transplanted Canadian, I won't be voting. But I do enjoy my coffee whether it's Republican or Democrat.

Personally I'm enjoying a sampler of sorts as I continue with my Boca Java selections with more than 30 unique blends and flavors you won't find anywhere else

I just opened a bag of Palm Beach Passion.  I know it's a strange name, but the aroma of the coffee is great.  I had set up the coffee brewing before I got in the shower. When I got out of the shower I could already smell the rich strong coffee flavor. And the taste didn't disappoint either. If you're a person who like a dark roast full-bodied cup of coffee then this is a great cup. Beans are a mix of dark and medium roast South American beans.

I really savored the taste as I drank the first cup. And the second cup was equally good. For me Boca Java is coffee that tastes as good as it smells.

So if you live in the US and can vote, you have 33 days till election. If you want to vote with your coffee cup then drop by 7-Eleven.  As for me, my coffee cup is stainless steel and I'm enjoying my coffee.

Not the usual grind,

A Canadian woman used her head and her coffee when faced with a carjacking the past week.

The Winnipeg woman was on her way to work and drinking coffee as she drove. Seems she stopped for a red light and a man with a hunting knife opened her car door. He told her to get out of the car.

The woman leaned on the horn and started screaming. Evidently she took some thought and flung her cup of hot coffee directly at the thief.

The man ran and the woman was safe, the car was not stolen. The woman was later treated at local hospital for a cut on her thumb from the attackers knife.

Sound like the woman's coffee was an aid in many ways. The coffee kept her alert and then was a great defensive weapon. According to CBS Canada the woman has been nicknamed "Ninja Nanny" by her grandchild.

Not the usual grind,

It's early this quiet Labor Day morning. I'm sitting here on the patio enjoying my Boca Sunrise coffee from Boca Java.
Boca Sunrise is a medium roast coffee with a crisp fresh taste. It's a blend from African, Central and South American beans. It's a perfect morning coffee.

Most of my neighbors are sleeping in on the last day of this three day weekend.

My neighbor Jim recently retired. Jim's a handy guy and one of the first things he did was to make some raised beds in his back yard. As I'm not a gardener I was curious. Seems the soil in San Antonio isn't of the best quality. Lots of rocks and not the best for growing. Well Jim decided to have soil brought in for the beds and next thing I knew one day one of the local nurseries delivered about 30 bags of soil.

Jim dutifully shoveled it into the beds and started his growing. He planted tomatoes, zucchini and lots of roses. He's left several tomatoes at my front door, but it's the roses I marvel at.

When I sit on my patio I get to admire Jim's roses. So it was no bother when he asked to have my used coffee grounds. Seems coffee provides some of the nutrients to the roses to make them grow better. Well those roses evidently liked the coffee as they've bloomed all this summer through the heat, thunderstorms and all the rest of the San Antonio weather.

I'm not the only one who has contributed to the roses. Other neighbors have been saving their grounds as well. Jim left a small plastic garbage can by the garage so the neighbors just drop off the grounds.

Jim told me he just scoops out the grounds and then works them into the soil. A big coffee guy Jim says the fragrance of the coffee is something special and makes the work go faster as he works the grounds into the soil.

So if you have some gardeners nearby you may want to offer your used coffee grounds. As for me I get to enjoy my coffee twice, once when I brew it and then when the flowers grow.

Not the usual grind,
